General Interest

General
Mexico are making their Olympic debut in 2020, having qualified through a third-place finish at the 2019 WBSC Premier 12 tournament. They beat the Dominican Republic, the United States of America, the Netherlands, Chinese Taipei and Australia, but defeats to Japan and the Republic of Korea saw them finish third after the conclusion of the super round stage of the tournament, with the top two progressing to the final.

Mexico then came up against the US team again in the bronze medal match, and were down 2-1 in the ninth inning with the US three outs away from claiming victory. However, Mexico's Matt Clark, who had represented the US team earlier in his career, hit a home run to tie the scores and send the game into extra innings. In extra innings runners are placed on first and second base to start each half-inning, and Efren Navarro secured victory for Mexico with a walk-off single in the 10th inning to book the team's berth in Tokyo.

Mexico made the podium five times at the discontinued World Cup [replaced by the Premier 12]. Prior to their bronze medal at the 2019 Premier 12, they finished fourth at the inaugural edition in 2015. They are yet to make the podium at a World Baseball Classic tournament, with a best finish of sixth in 2006.

At continental level, Mexico have won four bronze medals at the Pan American Games, most recently in 2007.
