He was the first pick overall, selected by the Florida Marlins, of the 2000 MLB draft. In 2003 he was traded to the Texas Rangers, with whom he made his MLB debut the following year. He was traded to the San Diego Padres in 2006 and played 799 games over five seasons with the franchise, including every regular season game in 2008. In 2010 he joined the Boston Red Sox and in 2011 led MLB in hits with 213, before joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in August 2012, where he recorded the most RBIs [116] in MLB in 2014. He signed as a free agent with the New York Mets in 2018, but was released in June that year. After a three-year hiatus, he signed with the Mexican Baseball League's Mariachis de Guadalajara in 2021. OLYMPIC DREAM
After three years away from professional baseball, in 2021 he joined Mexican Baseball League side Mariachis de Guadalajara with the ambition of playing for Mexico at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, having previously represented the country at the Caribbean Series, the World Baseball Classic and at junior competitions. "If I can complete those four, that's like the grand slam of representing Mexico. That is the only reason I have not retired yet."
