General
New Zealand secured their spot at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo by winning the 2018 OFC Women's Nations Cup in New Caledonia. They topped their group with three wins before successive 8-0 victories over hosts New Caledonia and then Fiji guaranteed their sixth title at the tournament.

The New Zealand team's first appearance at Olympic level came at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where they failed to make it out of their group. The team's performance at London 2012 was their best finish to date, beating Cameroon in their final group match to advance to the quarterfinals where they were defeated 2-0 by eventual gold medal winners the United States of America. At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the New Zealanders were the lowest ranked third-placed team and did not progress past the group stage.

New Zealand have competed at five editions of the Women's World Cup, finishing bottom of their group on each occasion and failing to make it out of the group stage.
