Her father, who was a former professional footballer, used to attend all her matches and offer advice and analysis, but after his death she says her mother stepped into the role of mentor. "I think what is nice about having all those years with my dad is that I know what he would say, I don't need her to try and be that for me, She is just supportive, it's like you can see her smile and positivity just through her voice. It's never forced, she's willing to wait for me to be ready. She'll shoot me a text and let me know that she is there if I want to talk, or if I'd rather her give me the night to sleep on it." LACK OF FEMALE ROLE MODELS
She says she was inspired by male football players in her youth due to the lack of female role models in the sport at that time. "[Female role models] just weren't very visible at all. Even when I went to America for college I had only sort of heard of Mia Hamm a couple of times and she's one of the biggest names in the game. When I was a bit older probably Maia Jackman was the most visible player in New Zealand but there wasn't much exposure. I didn't know that they went to World Cups or anything like that.
