At primary school she was given the option of joining the school choir or playing football with her older brother. "[Singing is] definitely not my cup of tea. My first football memory is of playing with my big brother and his friends in primary school. I loved the feeling of winning with a team and in many ways that is what drives me." "Representing your country is an incredibly emotional feeling for me, and it hits me most every time we sing the [national] anthem. I don't think that feeling will ever wear off or become mundane and I'm always so grateful to be wearing the Fern [New Zealand national symbol]." (footballfoundation.org.nz, 01 Sep 2019)

FREAK ACCIDENT
She says she was mentally able to recover quickly from breaking her wrist at the 2019 World Cup in France because the injury was an unexpected accident. She suffered the injury after she was struck by the ball during a match against Canada at the tournament. "First of all, getting to be part of a World Cup is an amazing experience. The injury was a hard pill to swallow, but the fact that it was such a freak incident, I couldn't be upset that I didn't prepare as well as I should have or anything like that. It was kind of just a matter of accepting it was completely out of the blue and could have happened to anyone. There was no time to cry about it. I think because I took this approach I mentally bounced back quite quickly." (footballfoundation.org.nz, 01 Sep 2019)
