General Interest

General
As the world's number 19th-ranked team at the time, Israel were surprise qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Games after winning a round robin qualifying tournament for teams from Europe and Africa in 2019. They lost one game against the Czech Republic but defeated Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and South Africa to finish tied at the top of the table alongside the Dutch team. Israel prevailed in the tournament courtesy of their head-to-head win over the Netherlands.

Prior to the Olympic qualifier, Israel's road to Tokyo began with victory over Lithuania in a best-of-three final round series in Pool B of the 2019 European Championships, which earned the team a place in the Pool A European Championships later that year in Germany. In the Pool A semifinals they lost to Italy 7-6, and were then defeated 16-11 by Spain in the third-place game to finish fourth. However, their top-five finish was enough to earn them a berth in the Europe-Africa Olympic qualifying tournament, where they dispatched tournament favourites Italy and the Netherlands 8-2 and 8-1, respectively, on their way to securing a berth for Tokyo.

The 2020 Olympic Games will be Israel's first Olympic appearance in the sport.
