Despite retiring from professional baseball in April 2017, he trained throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in anticipation for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It made me sad to think that my kids would never watch me play another baseball game or my kids would never even see me play a baseball game and actually remember it, but a door opened and it motivated me. Throughout the pandemic, as awful as the pandemic is and was, I got to train in my backyard, my boys got to watch me workout in the garage. They cheered me on after I was making throws after I had knee surgery. It was an incredible last 12 to 14 months [2020/21] of training in front of my boys." (ctinsider.com, 14 Jul 2021)

Being featured on his own Topps Now baseball card for Team Israel. "That card, that picture, I have it on every device I own. My best friend is Ryan Lawarnway and for that moment winning our first WBC game to be immortalised on a card, is a lifelong dream. I grew up collecting baseball cards. We joked about how cool it would be to have one of our own one day. But the fact I have my own and to have Team Israel as part of it was an honour." (jpost.com, 15 Jul 2021)

REPRESENTING ISRAEL
He grew up attending synagogue and Hebrew school three times a week until the age of 14, and participated in the Maccabi Games. "Being Jewish has always been something that I have been so proud of." He began playing baseball for Israel after being invited to do so by a reporter. "In 2011 I was playing in Arizona Fall league and I met reporter Jonathan Mayo in person and he asked if I wanted to play on an all Jewish team and play in Israel. Being a major and minor league player playing for Israel and to be fully immersed in national pride spurred the relationship and growth which turned into an Olympic team less than a decade later."
