Great Britain qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games through England's performance at the 2019 Women's World Cup in France. The four British football associations [England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland] had agreed to attempt to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games through the best performing home nation's result at the World Cup. England eventually placed fourth at the tournament after losing 2-1 to the United States of America in the semifinals and then suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sweden in the third-place playoff. However, fourth place was enough to secure a spot for Great Britain in Tokyo.

Great Britain are making only their second Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, having made their debut at London 2012 where they qualified as hosts. They won all three of their group matches in 2012, defeating Brazil, New Zealand, and Cameroon, before losing 2-0 to eventual bronze medallists Canada in the quarterfinals.
