General
Australia punched their ticket to Tokyo via the 2020 AFC Olympic Qualifying Tournament, beating Vietnam 7-1 on aggregate in the decisive two-legged play-off. Australia have competed at three of the six Olympic Games to feature women's football, and are yet to win an Olympic medal.

The Australians failed to progress from the group stage as hosts at Sydney 2000, and were knocked out in the quarterfinals at the 2004 Games in Athens. At Rio 2016 they lost their opening match to Canada, before drawing with Germany and trouncing Zimbabwe 6-1 to secure qualification for the knockout stages. Australia faced Brazil in the quarterfinals, where they eventually lost 7-6 in a penalty shoot-out.

At the 2019 World Cup in France, the Australian team gained a measure of revenge over Brazil, beating them 3-2 in the group stage before also defeating Jamaica. Facing Norway in the round of 16, Australia's hopes ended on penalties once again. At the 2015 World Cup, which was the first to feature 24 teams, they had gone one better by reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Japan.

Australia were also defeated by Japan in the final at the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2014 and 2018.
