General
Australia qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games through their performance at the 2020 Asian Football Confederation [AFC] U23 Championship in Thailand. Although they lost to the Republic of Korea in the semifinals, they beat Uzbekistan 1-0 in the third-place match to secure their spot for Tokyo.

The Australian team have competed at seven editions of the Games and are making their first Olympic appearance since 2008. They made their debut as hosts in 1956 in Melbourne, where they lost 4-2 to India at the quarterfinal stage. Australia achieved their best result at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, placing fourth after losing 1-0 to Ghana in the bronze medal match. The team reached the quarterfinals in 1988 and 2004, but they did not progress past the group stage at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
