He took up the sport in Luthermuir, Scotland. (sport.optus.com.au, 17 Mar 2020)
:
"I grew up in a place called Luthermuir which is in between Aberdeen and Dundee [Scotland], just a really small village probably about 120 people. All my family was from there, aunties, uncles, grannies. [It was a] small community with a little pub team, my uncle played for them on a Saturday so we used to go and watch, go on at half-time and try and score a goal. That was kind of my upbringing. My dad used to play semi-professional for our local team before I was born, so football was always going to be the journey. It was kind of drilled into me and my brother from an early age that this is the thing." (sport.optus.com.au, 17 Mar 2020)

FROM SCOTLAND TO AUSTRALIA
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he represented Scotland at junior level before switching his sporting allegiance to Australia. He was eligible to represent Australia due to his Australian mother. "Obviously growing up with my mum being Australian, listening to stories, even my granny telling me stories, it was a natural decision. I had good chats with the manager and assistant manager [of Australia], I met the assistant and he outlined where the pathway was for me. The last time I represented Scotland was at U19 level and I've just never spoken to anyone really from Scotland. It's not really that I picked Australia over Scotland, and I turned my back on Scotland. It was just a natural thing for me to pick Australia, it was something I wanted to do for me and my family. I made my decision because I felt it was right for me. For me, it is Australia and I'm going to stick with that. When I get a summer off the plan is to go off and see where my mum was brought up and where my granny and grandad went to. So, it is something that I really want to do and have always wanted to do. It's just being a footballer you don't get a lot of time to do that." (stokesentinel.co.uk, 16 Jun 2021; sundaypost.com, 07 Apr 2019; sport.optus.com.au, 17 Mar 2020)
