General Interest

General
Australia qualified for Tokyo courtesy of a first-place finish in the round robin Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifying event. They were undefeated across five games against Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, the Philippines, People's Republic of China and Hong Kong, China, scoring a tournament total of 37 runs and conceding only four.

Nicknamed the 'Aussie Spirit', the team won a medal at all four Olympic Games to feature the sport from 1996 to 2008, but have never claimed gold. They lost the final to the United States of America 5-1 in 2004 in Athens, where they were the only team to score a run against the US team, and picked up bronze medals in 1996, 2000 and 2008.

Australia won the first softball world championship in Melbourne in 1965, beating the United States of America in the final. Since then they have won one silver medal and six bronze medals, with a third-place finish in 2014 their most recent podium result. They placed fourth in 2018 after a 12-0 loss to Canada in the semifinals.

It is a similar story at the World Cup, where the team have five podium finishes but no gold medals. They were runners-up behind the United States of America in 2009 and 2012, and lost the third-place game to Canada at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2017.
