He has coached softball in Australia at domestic and national level since the 1990s. He has served as an assistant coach, specialist coach and head coach to the Australian men's junior team, as well as co-coach [alongside his father, Bob Harrow] and head coach of the Australian men's senior team. At domestic level he has served as head coach of Australian Capital Territory men's senior and men's age group teams.

He was born in Canada and moved to Australia in 1986 after his father, Robert 'Bob' Harrow, began a coaching role with Softball Canberra. Bob served as the Australian men's softball team head coach from 2000 to 2018, and guided the team to gold at the world championships in 2009. Bob was also instrumental in the development of a national fastpitch softball league in Australia in 1989, and in 2011 was inducted into the International Softball Federation [ISF] Hall of Fame for his services to softball. During Bob's tenure as Australian men's head coach, Laing has served as co-coach alongside his father. Laing's brother, Mike, has also represented Australia in both softball and ice hockey, while Laing's son, Matthew, grew up playing softball in Jerrabomberra, QLD, Australia. ICE HOCKEY INTERNATIONAL
He played ice hockey for Australia at four world championships from 1997 to 2000. He also represented Canada at youth level in the sport before he moved to Australia. At domestic level, he played ice hockey for the Canberra Knights for a decade before becoming player-coach of the team in 1997 and winning the Goodall Cup in 1998.
