General Interest

General
Ireland missed their chance to take part in the inaugural Olympic rugby sevens tournament at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, but they did not make the same mistake in 2021.

They booked their place in Tokyo at the final Olympic qualification tournament held in Monaco in June 2021. With only one Olympic berth available in Monaco, they won all six of their matches, which included overcoming a 12-7 halftime deficit in the final against France to triumph 28-19 and secure their spot at the 2020 Games.

Ireland finished third at the inaugural edition of the World Cup in 1993, but have only managed to achieve one top-10 finish in their five tournament appearances since. A ninth-place ranking at the 2018 edition in San Francisco, CA, United States of America, is their best performance during that time.

The Irish team have recorded good results at continental level in recent years. They recorded top-three finishes at three out of the past four editions of the European continental championships, including a title in 2018.

Their form at continental level has not translated to success at the World Series, but the team did secure their best overall World Series ranking during the 2019/20 season [10th].
