He has played rugby union [15-a-side] at national club level in Ireland for Shannon. He also represented Ireland in athletics at international junior level and placed sixth in 100m at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Summer Festival in Trabzon, Turkey. A series of injuries in early 2021 prevented him from training or playing for four weeks. (sportsjoe.ie, 21 Jun 2021)

He originally competed as a sprinter in athletics and played rugby union [15-a-side] with the Munster Schools provincial team before he decided to focus on rugby at age 16. "I was a guy who tried every sport. I ended up funnelling down towards athletics and rugby, and I competed internationally at both of them at the same time. I competed in athletics until I was about 16. I ran 10.87s for the 100m, which was all right at the time. But I just loved rugby and that's why I moved into that, and sevens really suits me the most because I have that sprinting background." (olympics.com, 08 Apr 2020)

SURPRISE CALL-UP
In June 2021 he received a late call-up to the Ireland squad that became the first to qualify for an Olympic Games in rugby sevens at the 2021 Olympic Repechage Tournament in Monaco. "Gavin Mullin, unfortunately, picked up a knock and I got brought in. I thought I'd just be a travelling reserve. I was delighted to even be with the team, to play my role, whatever was needed. Anthony Eddy decided to back me and put me in, and I ended up starting every game. I wasn't even supposed to be there but now I'm a full part of the team." (sportsjoe.ie, 21 Jun 2021, 21 Jun 2021)

SHUNNING CELEBRITY LIFE
In 2019 he was a member of the winning couple, along with Amber Gill, in the British reality TV show 'Love Island'. He decided to forgo the life of a celebrity, however, to focus on his rugby sevens aspirations and the couple also split up after the show. "I was like, 'Will I throw it all away just for a two week show that I've been on?' So I decided to move home and get back training with the boys. A lot of people gave me a lot of stick for throwing away the golden ticket, but I'm more than happy with my decision. I could have easily gone down the celebrity route, been the it-person at the time, moved to London, done the red carpets, events and made my hundreds of thousands, like everyone else does. But I was like, 'No, I'm coming home'. I've been so many years with this sevens team and, for me, it just didn't sit right because I've been working so long for this goal in rugby and to get to the Olympics and play in the World Series." (sportsjoe.ie, 21 Jun 2021; olympics.com, 08 Apr 2020)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
He has served as a member of the Rugby Players Ireland executive board. (rugbyplayersireland.ie, 23 Jun 2021; irishrugby.ie, 24 Apr 2019)
