He has played rugby union [15-a-side] at national club level in Ireland for Shannon. He also represented Ireland in athletics at international junior level and placed sixth in 100m at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Summer Festival in Trabzon, Turkey. He originally competed as a sprinter in athletics and played rugby union [15-a-side] with the Munster Schools provincial team before he decided to focus on rugby at age 16. "I was a guy who tried every sport. I ended up funnelling down towards athletics and rugby, and I competed internationally at both of them at the same time. I competed in athletics until I was about 16. I ran 10.87s for the 100m, which was all right at the time. But I just loved rugby and that's why I moved into that, and sevens really suits me the most because I have that sprinting background." (olympics.com, 08 Apr 2020)
