His father played rugby while the family lived in the United States of America. "Growing up, Dad always tried to have a bit of rugby in our lives, it was obviously difficult living in New York trying to get some rugby. Dad ended up finding a little bit of a rugby club out there where he would go and coach the kids. We would go with him. Rugby wasn't new to me when I came back to Ireland when I was 14 but it definitely wasn't something I was good at. I saw my first switch when I was 14. I went to Rockwell then and that's when I picked up playing rugby more." (Athlete, 20 Jul 2021; punditarena.com, 10 Jul 2018)

DREAM JOB
He has a passion for photography and videography, and in 2019 he won a position as an Instagram apprentice for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, which involved him being paid to travel around the world for three and a half weeks to create social media content. He beat over 37,000 people to the role. "My aunt sent me a Facebook message, saying, 'This job is perfect for you'. There was nothing to it other than having to post on Instagram, no signing up, no friends having to vote for you. It was just up to you essentially. We [the Ireland sevens team] were in Hong Kong trying to qualify for the World Series. On the Wednesday before the tournament, I got an email asking if it would be possible to take a phone call. I had a mini-interview, before receiving a phone call subsequently to tell me that I had won. They [teammates] didn't believe me. They thought I was making it up because we had won Hong Kong. I went to Miami, the Bahamas, Alaska, Japan, Dubai, Norway and Portugal. I got to choose what I wanted to do in those places prior to going out. They had a list of activities that I had access to and organised everything, pretty much. In Miami I went to different areas like Little Havana. When I was in Alaska, I did a helicopter ride, dog-sledding on top of a glacier in the mountains and zip-lining through the woods. In Japan, the company hired a private chauffeur for two days because of the language barrier. In four days I visited shrines and temples, dressed as a samurai and took a class. I ending up putting a video together and it went down well. I now have an agent for my content creations." (irishtimes.com, 09 Apr 2020)
