General Interest

General
Canada qualified for Tokyo 2020 by winning the 2019 Rugby Americas North [RAN] Sevens tournament in George Town, Cayman Islands, comfortably dispatching Jamaica 40-5 in the final. Tokyo will be the Canadian team's Olympic debut, after they failed to qualify for Rio following a quarterfinal defeat to the Russian Federation at the 2016 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Monaco.

Canada finished eighth in the shortened 2019/20 World Series. In the final leg of the 2019/20 edition before the competition was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on home soil in Vancouver, they produced their best performance of the series to finish third. Their best overall placing in the competition is sixth, which they achieved at the inaugural edition in 1999/00, and again in 2013/14.

The 2018 World Cup in San Francisco saw Canada lose to Argentina in the round of 16. They then contended for the tournament's Challenge Trophy, beating Japan before defeats to Australia and Wales saw them rank 12th.

The Canadian team have enjoyed most of their success at the Pan American Games in recent years. After winning gold at the 2011 and 2015 editions, they were denied a third consecutive title at the 2019 Games in Lima, where they were beaten by Argentina in the gold medal match.
