He grew up on his parents' dairy farm in Abbotsford, BC, Canada, where he worked with his father Glen from a young age. He has returned to work on the farm during the rugby off-season. "When I was a kid, it was hard to appreciate getting up early and going to work. But in reality, I learned a lot of life lessons. A lot of hard work went in." Glen put up rugby goal posts in a field on the farm for him and his brothers. "When we started playing rugby, my dad decided we needed somewhere to practise. It's pretty special to see the work ethic that he puts into everything he does and it makes me think, 'Yeah, I can work harder in rugby'."
