His parents Jon Thiel and Jen Ross both played rugby union [15-a-side] at international level. Jon represented Canada at three rugby world cups in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Jen represented Canada at the 1994 Rugby World Cup in Scotland, and has coached women's rugby at university level in Canada. His twin brother Josh Thiel has also played rugby union at youth international level and represented Canada at the 2017 World Rugby U20 Trophy in Montevideo, Uruguay. His grandfather John Ross represented Canada in curling, while his uncle Joe Ross competed in bobsled for Canada.
