General Interest

General
Ireland are making their Olympic debut at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. They booked a place at the tournament through the 2019 Women's FIH Olympic Qualifiers, in which they faced Canada in a two-match series. Both games finished goalless, but Ireland progressed after beating the Canadians in a penalty shootout.

Ireland reached the final at the most recent edition of the World Cup in 2018. They advanced to the championship game with the Netherlands thanks to penalty shootout wins over India in the last eight and Spain in the semifinals. However, the Dutch team were far too good and ran out 6-0 victors. The team's performance in 2018 was an outlier for Ireland at the World Cup. In the three editions the team played before 2018, they never finished in the top 10.

The Irish women have been regular participants at the EuroHockey championships, but are yet to finish on the podium. They were ranked fifth at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019.
