Won 2019 Oceania Ch. Won 2021 NCh. Finished 13th at 2019 Hypo-Meeting. Gold at 2018 Junior WCh. In other events - placed 7th in 4x400m relay at 2018 Junior WCh. He started as a high jumper and switching to decathlon was tricky. 'I have a love-hate relationship with it,' he says. 'I was petrified of the 400 and 1500m - and I still am.' Goal is to set a PB at Tokyo 2020.

After his 4th place at 2016 USA Olympic Trials, he signed for NFL team Atlanta Falcons having not played American Football since high school. His father Gary BASTIEN contested decathlete trials for the 1984 OG, while his mother Kathy was an athlete at university. In 2021 he adopted a more holistic approach to training with no weight sessions and says he has benefited.
