He began athletics as a high jumper before coach Eric Brown suggested he should compete in the triple jump. Brown then entered him into a regional combined events competition, convincing him and his mother that he should compete in the decathlon. SWITCH TO DECATHLON
He says he has a "love-hate relationship" with the decathlon, having switched to the event from jumping disciplines as a teenager. Coach Eric Brown had to convince Moloney's mother that he should make the switch. "It was a weird thing because I was petrified of the 400m and the 1500m, absolutely petrified and I still am [speaking in 2021]. But you come out of the decathlon and you actually enjoy the feeling of finishing it. It's a love-hate relationship; when you get a PB you love it.
