He started with triple jump at primary school and competed in the discipline until high school, when he decided he wanted to start training in more events. By the end of year 11 he had begun working with coach Gregory Portnoy, who encouraged him to take up octathlon and eventually decathlon. "My whole track and field story is a little weird. I ended up being OK at everything, and one day he [Portnoy] was like, 'Hey, Pierce, you want to do an octathlon?' I didn't know what I was getting myself into."
