He started with triple jump at primary school and competed in the discipline until high school, when he decided he wanted to start training in more events. By the end of year 11 he had begun working with coach Gregory Portnoy, who encouraged him to take up octathlon and eventually decathlon. "My whole track and field story is a little weird. I ended up being OK at everything, and one day he [Portnoy] was like, 'Hey, Pierce, you want to do an octathlon?' I didn't know what I was getting myself into." Taking part in the RBC Training Ground talent identification event in Canada in 2016. "That was my breakthrough thing, and I couldn't have got there without this support. General Interest

General
RIO 2016 DISAPPOINTMENT
His failure to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games forced him to focus more on consistency across all 10 disciplines. "In my decathlons previously, one event goes super well, one event goes poorly and screws everything up, but then in Australia this year [2018], nothing went super great but nothing went super bad so it was a consistent score. Usually if you're doing that in the decathlon, you end up with a good score. Being consistent in all 10 events, and if something goes wrong you don't beat yourself up over it, you just keep going onto the next event." (startingblockcanada.com, 05 Jul 2018; cbc.ca, 11 Apr 2018)

PROFESSIONAL VIDEO GAMER
He has competed as a professional video gamer, and still enjoys playing video games when not training. "If I'm not training, I'm playing video games. That's what I did before track, and that's what I do when I'm not on the track. I'm a huge advocate for E-sports. I think it's the future. [My] true off-season goal [is to be among the] masters in League of Legends, [the] top 0.1% in North America. I am a gaming warlord."
