He played volleyball and basketball until his sports teacher encouraged him to try athletics. He was also inspired by watching Polish hammer thrower Szymon Ziolkowski win gold at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney on television. "First I trained for high jump, but then when I moved to Warsaw I started to train under a coach who specialised in decathlon and encouraged me to try.
