His athletics career was inspired by watching Polish hammer thrower Szymon ZIOLKOWSKI winning gold at 2000 OG.

He almost quit in 2018 after rupturing his Achilles tendon and his club closed down, leaving him unemployed. 'We lost everything at once and I thought about stopping.' He started as a high jumper and switching to decathlon was tricky. 'I have a love-hate relationship with it,' he says. 'I was petrified of the 400 and 1500m - and I still am.' Goal is to set a PB at Tokyo 2020.

His father Gary BASTIEN contested decathlete trials for the 1984 OG, while his mother Kathy was an athlete at university. In 2021 he adopted a more holistic approach to training with no weight sessions and says he has benefited.
