He took up athletics at age 17 in high school. (olympic.ca, 30 Aug 2015)

He was persuaded to take up decathlon by his high school basketball coaches, including Gar Leyshon, who became his personal decathlon coach. "I played basketball in high school, and my basketball coach had started a track and field team. I started doing long jump, triple jump, and high jump - all the jumps in track and field - and then they got me involved in sprinting. I was thinking about going to play football or something, but they suggested I try the decathlon. We finished second in the Canadian championships that year, and the next year we went to the world championships. It's been a journey of travelling around the world and competing ever since." "Early in the season, it's a lot of fitness-based work, getting your body ready to do all the training. We try to do all the events through the week. We usually do a run, jump, and throw. On Mondays and Thursdays, maybe Saturdays, we'll do harder running. Pole vault once or twice a week, and long jump once or twice a week, too." (lfpress.com, 10 May 2019; gq.com, 03 Jan 2019)

:
"When you do a decathlon over 48 hours, the amount of time you spend actually doing physical activity is along the lines of 10 or 11 minutes, which is kind of crazy. There's a lot of sitting around and thinking about the next event, and that's where people really get exhausted. I think it's very similar to golf; you do one thing, then you have a lot of time in between, and then you do another thing. If you had a really bad event, that can affect you for a long time. Same way if you have a good event, that can drain your energy really quickly if you're not able to reset." (gq.com, 03 Jan 2019)

In 2018 he was named Summer Male Athlete of the Year at the Canadian Sports Awards. (cbc.ca, 21 Sep 2018)

A poll of CBC Sports television viewers named him Canada's Athlete of the Year in 2013. (cbc.ca, 08 Dec 2013)

MOVING BACK HOME
In 2018 he moved from Calgary, AB, Canada, where he had been training with Les Gramantik, back to London, Ontario, where was born and raised. He moved to be reunited with coach Gar Leyshon, who he has known since high school. "I think it's the best decision. Calgary had its advantages and disadvantages, but I think ultimately it comes down to being around family and friends. One of the things that Gar has talked about a lot [is] buying in 100%, and to me that means you have to be happy, you have to enjoy what you're doing. That's not to say I lost joy at any point [in Calgary], I love the decathlon, but you need everything to be happy. And being around family and friends and having people I enjoy being around and believe in, that's ultimately what's going to lead me to my goals." (cba.ca, 26 May 2019; cbc.ca, 21 Sep 2018)

TEAMMATE
In 2019 he said he enjoyed competing with fellow Canadian decathlete Pierce Le Page. "It's special, for me. For the longest time, over the last however many years, I've been going to a lot of these competitions by myself as the only Canadian. Now, not only do we have another Canadian, we have a great Canadian decathlete and now we're [finishing] one and two. I could see this happening at world championships and Olympics."
