General
The United States of America secured a spot at the 2020 Olympic Games by finishing as runners-up in the 2018/19 World Series. The US team won one, lost one and drew one of their pool matches at the 2016 Games, which was enough to progress to the quarterfinals as one of the two best third-placed teams. They faced New Zealand in the last eight, where a try from Portia Woodman in the seventh minute proved the difference between the two teams as the match finished 5-0 to the Kiwis. The US team were eventually ranked fifth after defeating Fiji and France in the ranking play-off matches.

The US team finished fifth in the truncated 2019/20 World Series. They started their campaign strong, claiming victory in the opening leg on home soil in Glendale, Colorado. They beat Australia 26-7 in the final to secure their second consecutive World Series event win, following on from their triumph in the closing leg of the 2018/19 Series in Biarritz. The team's impressive start to the 2019/20 edition faded, and they placed eighth at what proved to be the final leg of the series in Sydney.

The United States of America placed third at the inaugural edition of the World Cup in 2009, and backed that up with the same result four years later in Moscow, Russia, going out to New Zealand at the semifinal stage both times. They once again lost to New Zealand in the semifinals at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, but on this occasion they were unable to secure a podium spot after losing 24-14 to Australia in the bronze medal match.

The US team won consecutive silver medals at the Pan American Games in 2015 and 2019, losing the gold medal match to their North American rivals Canada on both occasions.
