General Interest

General
The Dominican Republic were the last team to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Having missed their chance at the Americas Qualifying Tournament, they secured their ticket to Tokyo after defeating Venezuela in the final match of the Final Qualifying Tournament. After falling behind 3-0 in the second innings, the Dominican team came back to 3-2 in the third, before a booming six-run fourth innings set them on the path to an 8-5 victory and their first Olympic berth in nearly 30 years.

The last, and only, time the Dominican Republic appeared at the Olympic Games prior to Tokyo was the 1992 Games in Barcelona when baseball made its debut as a medal sport. They posted two wins and five loses in Barcelona, which was not enough to progress to the knockout stages and saw them finish ranked sixth out of the eight teams.

Baseball in the Dominican Republic stretches back to the late 19th century and the nation's history of success in the sport stretches back a long way too. They were World Cup champions in 1948 and three-time runners up in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as Pan American Games champions in 1955. But in more recent years trophies have proved harder to procure, aside from victory at the 2013 World Baseball Classic where they defeated Puerto Rico in the final.

At the WBSC Premier 12 in 2019, losses against Mexico and the United States of America prevented them from progressing beyond the group stage.
