Team Gushue

General Interest

Canada men lead all NOCs with five medals won in six attempts, their only blank coming with Kevin Koe’s fourth-place finish at PyeongChang 2018. Silver medals were won at Nagano 1998 and Salt Lake City 2002, before three straight gold at Torino 2006 (Brad Gushue), Vancouver 2010 (Kevin Martin) and Sochi 2014 (Brad Jacobs). Gushue and third Mark Nichols return to Beijing 16 years after their Torino triumph.

Since Mike Harris’ silver at Karuizawa in 1998, every Canadian men’s skip’s first name has been either Kevin or Brad.

At 53 World Championships, the largest curling nation has won an unprecedented 46 medals, 29 of them gold. The most recent came in 2017 with Gushue’s perfect 13-0 record.

Gushue’s current team has been intact since 2015, qualifying for seven consecutive Canadian (Brier) Championships with victories in 2017 and 2018. They’ve also won eight Grand Slam titles over that period. Their victory at the 2021 Canadian Olympic Trials saw Gushue and Jacobs both lead the round-robin at 7-1, with Gushue edging Jacobs 4-3 in the final after Jacobs thumped Koe 8-3 in the semi-final.

This season, Team Gushue is 24-2 with a scoring average of 8.33 points per game against an average of 4.66 points surrendered. They’ve won two World Curling Tour events in addition to the Olympic Trials and placed third at their sole Grand Slam event appearance.

Gushue is 61-24 lifetime against the field in Beijing, a stunning 71.8 winning percentage, and 16-9 this Olympic cycle. His 10-5 career mark versus Great Britain is just 5-4 since 2018-19, and he’s 8-3/0-2 against the United States. His 21-7/4-1 records against Sweden remain strong, as they do versus Switzerland (13-7/5-1).

Brendan Bottcher’s 9-4 finish at the 2021 World Championship qualified Canada in fifth place for Beijing.

World Ranking: 3rd (69.726 pts)
