:

St. John’s Curling Club in 1989. He and his sister had begged their parents for years to try curling until they relented. “I remember being 14 or 15 years old, being there every day. Even Friday nights – we’d play Friday afternoons, play pool and wait while a teacher’s league finished, and then go back on the ice at 10 o’clock at night. I was a rink rat.” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)

:

“Curling has a little bit of individualism, when you’re throwing your rock you’re kind of on stage, it’s your time. But there’s also a huge team component, so that mixture was a big benefit for me. I also played chess when I was a kid, and curling has that strategy component. It’s very thoughtful game, it’s not a real reactionary sport like basketball or hockey.” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)

:

“I want to keep going for another quadrennial but after that, I’d love to stay involved in the sport – and that’s assuming I’m done in four years. I’d also like to explore different areas, whether it’s in business, politics, philanthropy, I’d like to try something different. I don’t have a master plan as of yet.” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)

:

Works out five to six days per week in the off-season and two to three times per week during the season. On-ice the team trains for two hours per day five times per week.

:

Winning his first Brier title in St. John’s in 2017. “We were the best team in the world during that stretch. I think the year before we were the first team to win 100 games in a year. But I never felt pressure as high as what I felt in St. John’s.” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)

:

Curler Pat Ryan (CAN), two-time World Championship gold meal winning skip, and three-time winner of the Brier.

Curler and former teammate Russ Howard (CAN), Torino 2006 Olympic gold medallist and two-time world champion.

Curler Kevin Martin (CAN), Vancouver 2010 Olympic gold medallist, 2008 world champion, and four-time winner of the Brier.

General Interest

COVID ANXIETY
Isolated with his family for weeks at home, prior to departing for Vancouver, BC for team isolation and pre-Games training sessions. “Unfortunately, the biggest preparation for the Olympics is trying to avoid a virus, rather than training and competing in your sport. I am nervous and I do have anxiety. As much as we can reduce the risk, it’s not really in our control because we still have to interact with coaches and physio and massage and team doctors and things like that when we get together in Vancouver and as we go on to Beijing. We just have to hope that they’re doing all the right things as well.” (torontosun.com, 4 Jan 2022)

PRACTICE INTENSITY
Throws far fewer practice stones due to age and ongoing muscle injuries. “That’s been a real change for me. My intensity level has increased dramatically because the volume of rocks isn’t as high. Looking back, if I could have done this 20 years ago and been able to have this intensity, and focus on every practice rock… who knows?” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)

FITNESS MOGUL
Co-owner of Orange Theory Fitness studio in St. John’s with teammate Mark Nichols. Also owns two additional studios, another in St. John’s and two in Halifax.

MASTER’S DEGREE
Currently studying for a Masters degree in business administration, while juggling work and a curling career. “I am a sucker for punishment. I keep putting myself in these positions where I work hard to take things off my plate, and then I feel good. Then I add more stuff, and I go through this cycle. I don’t know why I keep doing it, but the positive thing is I’ve built a pretty good capacity for taking on a heavy workload.” (Athlete, 17 Dec 2021)
