General Interest

“This team is a coach’s dream, individually and as a team, on and off the ice. One cannot ask for much more.” (Coach, 17 January 2022)

In addition to Salt Lake 2002 and Vancouver 2010, he coached Kevin Martin at the Albertville 1992 demonstration event (fourth place).

He says that coaching keeps him young. “I guess when you get older you stay with the young kids, you start to think like them. I can’t go have a coffee with guys in my group because they’re talking about gardening and I want to be with the kids – like what’s the latest band and what happened last night. So it keeps you younger.” (tsn.ca, 6 March 2019)

Canada’s Janet Arnott Exceptional Coach Award recognizes exceptional coaching contributions and accomplishments over a significant period of time. It is awarded only in special circumstances to an individual who has coached at the national/high performance level, and has been a difference-maker in the sport of curling as a result of their contribution to the development, well-being or sport-for-life aspirations of an athlete, athletes or team.

His Canadian Hall of Fame year was 2019. “To me it’s a team award. You know how many guys I have to thank for getting this? The guys who worked so hard and performed? I always said ‘I’ve got the easy job. I sit behind the glass and they do all the work.’” (Coach, winnipegsun.com, 5 March 2019)
