General Interest

General
Italy are making their Paralympic Games debut in Tokyo, having qualified through their second-place finish behind the Russian Federation at the European championships in Budapest in 2019. Only one ticket to Tokyo was on offer in Hungary, but the Russian team had already qualified via the previous year's world championships. As a result, the Italian team's victory over Germany in the semifinals was enough to secure a historic Paralympic berth for the nation.

The Italian team made their first world championship appearance in 2018 in the Netherlands. They began their campaign with a 3-0 pool loss to the People's Republic of China, before posting a straight sets victory over Slovenia and a 3-1 win against the Islamic Republic of Iran to finish second in their group. They dispatched the host nation 3-2 in the quarterfinals, but could not overcome eventual runners-up the United States of America in the semifinals, losing in straight sets. The Chinese team proved too strong once again, this time in the bronze medal match, leaving the Italians with a respectable fourth-place finish from their debut world championship appearance.
