General Interest

General
Japan have competed at the past four editions of the Olympic Games, achieving a best ranking of eighth on their debut in 2004. In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the team did not qualify for the knockout stage after registering one draw and four losses in the group phase. They secured their place at Tokyo 2020 as hosts.

Japan have appeared at every World Cup since 2002. The team achieved their best result in 2006 in Madrid, where they finished fifth. At the 2018 World Cup, Japan's sole victory in the pool matches came against New Zealand and they did not progress to the knockout stage of the tournament. They have also competed at five editions of the Champions Trophy since 2007, recording a tournament-best ranking of fifth in both 2007 and 2012.

The Japanese team are the reigning champions at the Asian Games, having beaten India in the final in 2018 in Indonesia to secure their first gold medal at the tournament. They have also experienced success at the Asia Cup, securing the title in 2007 and 2013.
