General Interest

General
Honduras secured their spot at Tokyo 2020 through a runners-up finish at the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship in March 2021 in Mexico, where they lost to the hosts in a penalty shoot-out in the final. It meant that for the third consecutive Olympic Games, Honduras and Mexico were the teams to qualify from the North, Central American and Caribbean region.

At Rio 2016, Honduras produced their best performance at the Olympic Games in four appearances, just missing out on the podium. In their group, a win over Algeria, a draw with Argentina, and a defeat to Portugal set up a quarterfinal match with the Republic of Korea, which they won 1-0. In the semifinals they faced Brazil, who swept aside the Hondurans 6-0 at the Maracana. Honduras then took on Nigeria in the bronze medal match and lost 3-2.

Rio was the first time Honduras had progressed beyond the quarterfinals at the Games. At London 2012 they were beaten in the last eight by the Brazilians, who had to come from behind twice to win 3-2. In their previous two appearances, in 2000 and 2008, Honduras managed just one victory in total and did not progress from their group on either occasion.
