General Interest

General
Serbia qualified for Tokyo on home soil after finishing second in Group A at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, where they lost to the US team and posted victories over Nigeria and Mozambique.

At Serbia's first Olympic Games, in Rio in 2016, they lost three group phase games to Spain, Canada and the United States of America, but wins against the Chinese team and Senegal saw them progress to the knockout stages. They beat Australia by two points in the quarterfinals, but succumbed to Spain again in the semifinals, before beating France 70-63 to win bronze on their Olympic debut.

After losing to Latvia in the qualification round for the quarterfinals at EuroBasket in 2017, where they finished 11th, Serbia failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. In their only appearance at a World Cup in 2014 they finished ranked eighth overall.

The Serbian team arrive in Tokyo as the reigning European champions, having triumphed at the EuroBasket tournament in June 2021 with a 63-54 victory over France in the final. In 2015 they also beat France to win the title, and finished third at the 2019 edition.
