General Interest

General
The Puerto Rican women's team will make their Olympic debut in Tokyo, after finishing third in their group at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bourges, France. Despite losing heavily to hosts France and Australia, their opening match win over Brazil in overtime was enough to secure an Olympic berth.

Puerto Rico have only featured at the World Cup [formerly the world championship] on one occasion, at the 2018 edition in Tenerife, Spain. They lost all three group matches against Belgium, Spain and Japan, and finished ranked last out of 16 teams due to their points difference.

Puerto Rico have competed at five editions of the Pan American Games between 1979 and 2019. In 2011 they won gold in Guadalajara, Mexico, defeating the United States of America in the preliminary round 75-70 before overcoming hosts Mexico, 85-67, to claim their first Pan American Games title. They dipped to sixth at the 2015 edition, before bouncing back to win bronze in 2019 in Lima, Peru, where they defeated Colombia in the third-place match after a semifinal defeat to the United States of America.

At the 2021 AmeriCup on home soil, Puerto Rico produced their best performance yet at the tournament to finish as runners-up, losing 74-59 to the US team in the final. They previously finished third in 1995 and 2017, and were fourth at the 2019 edition, which they also hosted.
