General Interest

General
Spain are the reigning Olympic silver medallists, having claimed their first Olympic medal in 2016 following a 101-72 defeat in the final to the United States of America, who they also lost to in the group stage in Rio. Their journey to the gold medal match included a semifinal win over Serbia, who they also beat in the group stage, and victories against Canada, the People's Republic of China, Turkey and Senegal.

Spain qualified for Tokyo, their fifth Olympic Games, by finishing second behind the People's Republic of China in Group B at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade.

At the World Cup [formerly the world championship], Spain finished on the podium for a third consecutive time on home soil in 2018, after defeating Belgium in the bronze medal match following a semifinal exit to Australia. They had lost to Belgium in the group stage, and beat Canada in the quarterfinals. Their best ever World Cup result came at the 2014 edition, where they won silver after losing the final to the United States of America 77-64. They also won bronze at the 2010 edition.

At continental level Spain claimed a fourth EuroBasket gold medal in 2019, to go with triumphs in 2017, 2013 and 1993. On all four occasions they defeated France in the final. At the 2021 EuroBasket they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Serbia 71-64.
