General Interest

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Competed in the men’s Olympic ice hockey since its introduction at Antwerp 1920, with the exception of Sapporo 1972 and Innsbruck 1976. The team won six of the first seven gold medals, losing only one match in that stretch to Great Britain in 1936, and as a result won silver.

Canada returned to the top of the podium at Salt Lake City 2002, dispatching the host nation 5-2 in the gold medal match. The rivals faced off again for gold on Canadian home soil in 2010 (Vancouver), as Sidney Crosby (CAN) slotted the match-winner for the hosts in overtime (3-1).

After winning gold undefeated at Sochi 2014, Canada contested the bronze medal match against the Czech Republic at PyeongChang 2018, having lost to Germany 4-3 in the semi-finals. Although they had lost to the Czechs in a shootout in the preliminary round, the Canadians secured bronze in a high-scoring affair (6-4).

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Crowned world champions 27 times, including winning the first six tournaments. Canada secured a medal in each of their first 26 appearances, failing to reach the podium for the first time in 1963. They returned to the top of the podium in 1994, the first time in 33 years, and have won seven titles since.

Their most recent title came in 2021 (Riga), where they defeated Finland in the championship match, after losing to the Finns in the 2019 decider. The 2021 title was decided in overtime with Nick Paul (CAN) scoring the winner 6:26 into extra time (3-2). It was the second overtime playoff victory for the Canadians after Andrew Mangiapane (CAN) secured a 2-1 victory against the Russian Olympic Committee in the quarterfinals.

QUALIFICATION
Qualified for Beijing 2022 after finishing first in qualification seeding following the 2019 World Championship in Slovakia.
