Team Jones

General Interest

Canada women lead all NOCs with five medals won in six attempts, with their only blank coming with Rachel Homan’s sixth-place finish at PyeongChang 2018. Bronze was earned at Salt Lake City 2002 and Torino 2006, silver at Vancouver 2010 and gold at Nagano 1998 and Sochi 2014.

Jennifer Jones returns to Beijing after going 13-0 in Sochi, with longtime teammates Kaitlyn Lawes and Dawn McEwen in tow. Second Jocelyn Peterman, the fiancee of men’s team second Brett Gallant, makes her Olympic debut while alternate Lisa Weagle returns from PyeongChang. Lawes also won Olympic gold for mixed doubles in Korea.

Jones finished her Canadian Olympic Trials round-robin in second place at 5-3, before winning her semi-final 8-3, and a remarkable final over world number one-ranked Tracy Fleury. Jones missed her shot for the win in the 10th end, forcing an extra-end, and could only watch as Fleury missed her shot for the win in the 11th, handing Jones the victory.

At World Championships, Canada dominates with 17 gold medals, plus eight silver and nine bronze. Jones has competed in six championships and owns two gold, one silver and one bronze in the medal count, and has finished fourth twice.

This season, Team Jones is 32-15 with a scoring average of 8.53 points per game compared to an average of 5.97 points against. They placed second at a Grand Slam tournament, third at two World Curling Tour events in Ontario and fifth at two others in Alberta.

Jones is 76-42 lifetime against the field in Beijing, a 64.4% win percentage, but just 19-23 (45.2%) since 2018. Over the past four years, her team holds advantages over Great Britain (8-2) and Switzerland (5-2) but are running deficits against Sweden (0-5), ROC (1-5), Japan (4-5), USA (0-2) and Denmark (0-1). Their current losing streak against Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg has come after a six-match win streak against them.

Kerri Einarson’s sixth-place finish at the 2021 World Championship qualified Canada in sixth place for Beijing.

World Ranking: 5th (59.124 pts)
