General Interest

General
Canada secured their spot in Tokyo on home soil at the 2020 Paralympic Qualification Tournament in Richmond.

The Canadian team narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games after a tight 52-50 defeat to Japan in the bronze medal match. The Canadians had come through their group in Rio with wins over Brazil and Great Britain, before losing out to the US team 60-55 in the semifinals.

Rio was the first time Canada had failed to make the Paralympic podium since 2000, when they also finished fourth. Having won silver when wheelchair rugby appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Games, the Canadian team again claimed silver in 2004 behind New Zealand, and bronze in 2008 after beating Great Britain in the third-place match. They made the final at London 2012 after a memorable one-point victory over their continental rivals the United States of America in the semifinals, but came away with silver following defeat to Australia in the final.

Canada have won five world championship medals, a total only bettered by the US team's seven. At the 2018 World Championship in Sydney they placed sixth, beating Denmark in the first classification round before suffering defeat to France in the fifth-place match. The Canadians were runners-up to Australia at the 2014 edition in Odense, and won the world title in 2002 over the US team.
