The RPC secured qualification for Tokyo at the 2019 European Championships in Budapest.

The Russian Federation have competed at three Paralympic Games. After finishing ninth at their first Games in 1996, the Russian team next appeared at the 2008 Games. They were eliminated in Beijing in the semifinals by eventual gold medallists the Islamic Republic of Iran, but bounced back to win bronze in five sets against Egypt. They had a chance to defend their bronze in 2012 after another semifinal defeat at the hands of the Iranians, but this time it was Germany who succeeded in five sets, sending the Russians home from London empty-handed in fourth place.

The Russian team have appeared at every world championships since 2006. They contested the bronze medal match at the 2010 edition, but Egypt got the better of them. At the 2018 edition the Russians opened with victories over Germany and Japan and a defeat to the Iranians in the pool stage, before Bosnia and Herzegovina knocked them out of the quarterfinals. They ended their campaign with classification victories over the United States of America and Egypt to finish fifth out of 16 teams.

The Russian Federation won the European championship title in both 2017 and 2019. They overcame powerhouse Bosnia and Herzegovina in dramatic fashion in the 2019 final in Hungary, surviving three match points before securing gold in five sets.
