He was forced to switch to home schooling after his accident and began gaining weight as he did not leave the house very often. His mother Olga took him to the pool to increase his activity level and he started swimming regularly. He also took up shooting, and went on to achieve a top-10 result at a national competition. He then met Sergey Yakunin, captain of the national sitting volleyball team, and coach Viktor Dyakov while he was at a prosthetics centre in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation and they both invited him to try the sport.
