Germany qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games by way of their position on the world ranking list. They were runners-up on a home course at the 2019 World Championships, four seconds behind the French team that has dominated the competition in recent years.
The German team did not manage to replicate that performance at the world championships in 2020, finishing eighth. They won the world title in 2013 at the first edition of the world championships to take place in Hamburg, where it has been held ever since. At the 2019 World Series event in Tokyo, on the Olympic course, they ranked 10th. Their best placing at a World Series event has been fifth, which they managed in both Abu Dhabi and Nottingham in 2019.
