General Interest

General
Australia booked their ticket to Tokyo as winners of the 2019 Oceania Championship in Suva, Fiji. They defeated the hosts 22-7 in the final, ensuring a return to the Olympic stage after finishing eighth in Rio.

At the 2016 Games, Australia won two of their three Pool B matches before being beaten in the quarterfinals 22-5 by eventual bronze medallists South Africa, who they had defeated 12-5 in the pool phase. They then narrowly lost out to France 12-10 in the seventh-place match.

Australia finished fourth in the truncated 2019/20 World Series, closing out their campaign with a strong showing in Vancouver, where they were beaten finalists 17-14 against New Zealand. The Australians' overall ranking of fourth equalled their best World Series result since they placed third in 2009/10, but they are yet to match their runners-up finish in 2000/01.

It is a similar story at the World Cup, where Australia's performances in recent years have not lived up to the expectations set previously. They finished on the podium in three out of the first four editions of the World Cup, finishing runners-up in 1993 and 2001, and third in 2005, but have failed to achieve a top-three finish at the last three tournaments. The 2018 edition in San Francisco saw them defeated by France 22-17 in the round of 16, before losing to Ireland in the Challenge Trophy final.
