He was encouraged by his friend and Australian national teammate Tom Lucas to begin playing rugby in his youth, despite his parents' reservations. He took the opportunity to play rugby sevens because he thought it would give him the best chance to represent Australia. (rupa.com.au, 17 Oct 2013)

General Interest

General
RETURN TO SEVENS
After competing in rugby sevens at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in 2017 he switched to 15-a-side with rugby union team Leicester Tigers in the English Premiership. After a year abroad he returned to the Australian sevens side in 2018, and was made captain by national coach Tim Walsh in January 2020. "I feel very happy and humbled to be able to captain my country. It's a huge honour and one I'm really looking forward to getting after being vice-captain." (rugby.com.au, 17 Jan 2020; smh.com.au, 16 Jan 2020; gettyimages.ie, 11 Aug 2016)

VERSATILITY
He has played as both a forward and a back during his rugby career. He originally played as a forward [flanker] in rugby union [15-a-side] before shifting to the centre as a back to improve his chances of selection for Australia's sevens squad. He was also a back [winger] during his spell playing rugby union with Leicester Tigers in England, but since returning to the Australian national sevens team has reverted to playing as a forward. "I think it's been good to draw upon both positions in sevens. Playing flanker has helped me out defensively, and centre has helped me out offensively in attack." (rugby.com.au, 08 Dec 2013; rupa.com.au, 17 Oct 2013; leicestermercury.co.uk, 28 Mar 2020; smh.com.au, 16 Jan 2020)

OCCUPATION
He has worked as an office leasing intern at a real estate agency in Sydney, NSW, Australia. "With the uncertainty that comes with professional sport I am striving to continue to develop my career away from rugby and prepare myself for the inevitable transition into the corporate world."
