General Interest

General
Argentina punched their ticket to Tokyo by claiming victory at the 2019 South American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Chile.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, the Argentinian team recorded pool phase wins over the United States of America and hosts Brazil, and a 21-14 defeat to a strong Fiji side that went on to claim gold. In a dramatic quarterfinal against Great Britain, Argentina missed a stoppage time penalty with the match tied at 0-0. They went on to lose 5-0 after sudden death, and ranked sixth in the tournament following a 17-14 loss to New Zealand in the fifth-place match.

Argentina ranked ninth in the curtailed 2019/20 World Series. They have consistently finished inside the top 10 of the World Series in recent years, without regularly contending with the competition's elite. Their best ranking of third came in 2003/04, and the closest they have come to matching that in recent years are fifth-place finishes in 2004/05, 2008/09 and 2015/16.

At the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco they finished fifth, knocked out in the quarterfinals by Fiji before winning the fifth-place match against the United States of America. Their best World Cup performance was in 2009 when they finished runners-up to Wales following a 19-12 loss in the final. They also placed third at the 2001 tournament on home soil.

Most of Argentina's success has come in continental competition, and in 2020 they won their sixth South American championship title since 2010. They claimed a maiden Pan American Games gold medal in 2019 in Lima, beating Canada, following losses to the Canadian team in the gold medal match of the previous two editions of the tournament.
