General Interest

General
India made their second Olympic appearance at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Their first came at the 1980 Games in Moscow, when women's hockey was first added to the programme. The Indian team went winless in Brazil, with four losses and a draw in the group stage leaving them ranked last overall.

India's first Olympic Games was impacted by a boycott that forced organisers to run a six-team invitational tournament. India missed out on a medal due to a 3-1 defeat to the Soviet Union in the final set of round-robin matches.

The Indian team are yet to compete at the Champions Trophy, and their best result at the World Cup is a fourth-place finish in 1974. Their greatest successes are gold medals at the 1982 Asian Games, the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and the Asia Cup in 2004 and 2017.

India booked their place at Tokyo 2020 through the 2019 Women's FIH Olympic Qualifiers, where they scraped past the United States of America in a two-game series. India won the first match 5-1 and then lost the second 4-1 to sneak a one-goal aggregate win.
