Great Britain are three-time gold medallists at the Olympic Games, the most recent of which came in 1988. They have not finished on the podium since then, although they came close as hosts at London 2012 where they were defeated by Australia in the bronze medal match. The British team were ranked ninth at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, which was their worst finish since Athens 2004.

Great Britain booked a place at the Tokyo Games through the 2019 Men's FIH Olympic Qualifiers. They played a two-game series against Malaysia in London, which they won 9-3 on aggregate.

Teams representing Great Britain and England have competed at the Champions Trophy since 1978, but a British or English team is yet to win a title at the tournament. Great Britain finished as runners-up in 1985, while England were losing finalists in 2010. The British team were ranked fourth at the 2019 Pro League.
