General
Canada are competing at the Olympic Games for the eighth time at Tokyo 2020. They made their debut at the 1964 Games, which also took place in Tokyo, and have never been ranked higher than 10th.

The Canadian team finished bottom of their group at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro after recording four defeats, as well as a draw with India. They did not compete at the 2012 Games in London, and claimed a single pool win over South Africa and a draw with Great Britain at Beijing 2008.

Canada secured their place at Tokyo 2020 with victory over Ireland at the 2019 Men's FIH Olympic Qualifiers. Having lost the first leg of the playoff 5-3, Canada were soon trailing by a further goal when Ireland scored early in the second leg. Canada responded to score three goals, which included a penalty that was awarded in the last minute of normal time. With the aggregate score tied at 6-6, the Canadian team progressed by winning a penalty shootout.

Canada have struggled to make an impact at the World Cup, and have competed at only six editions of the tournament. They picked up a draw against South Africa in the pool stage of the 2018 World Cup, before being eliminated by the Netherlands in the second round cross-overs.

At continental level, the Canadians have been in a long-running tussle with Argentina for Pan American supremacy. The teams have met in the final at all 12 editions of the Pan American Games since 1975, with Canada winning gold four times in that period.
