His older brothers Stephen and Matthew, who are twins, have also represented Canada in hockey and played on the same team as him. He says playing to their level in a higher age group growing up was beneficial to him when first starting out. "When I was growing up, I used to always play two years up on their team. think that kind of helped develop my skills at an early age.
